We use Herts for Learning Essential Maths Learning Sequences to help us teach the maths curriculum. The learning sequences are designed to cover the National Curriculum statements and key concepts, through small learning steps with a mastery approach to develop fluency, reasoning and problem solving. The learning sequences also aim to develop and consolidate conceptual understanding and procedural fluency, and include the use of speaking frames, talk partners, practice examples, games, destination questions and problem solving opportunities for the children to build upon and extend their learning. Teachers deliver careful modelling with concrete resources and pictorial representations to develop the children’s understanding.

We ask parents to support their child’s learning by discussing with them what they have learned at school, showing an interest in their home learning and taking the opportunity to count with them, help them to remember their multiplication tables and talk about maths as it occurs naturally in their lives, such as when shopping or cooking.

Our maths curriculum supports our children in developing:

  • a deep understanding of the important concepts in maths
  • an ability to make connections and links within mathematics
  • a broad range of skills and strategies in using and applying mathematics
  • fluent knowledge and recall of number facts and the number system
  • the ability to show initiative and resilience when solving problems in a wide range of contexts, including real-life situations
  • the ability to think both independently and collaboratively, and to persevere when faced with challenges
  • the ability to reason using a wide range of mathematical vocabulary, and to be able to discuss their thinking
  • fluency in performing written and mental calculations and mathematical techniques
  • a commitment to and passion for the subject
